Audience Hall of Parakramabahu
Parakramabahu's Audience Hall is a classic
example of the masonry of the period. At the entrance there is a
moonstone and a flight of steps with makara figures. Above the makara
figures there are beautiful figures of lions. It is recorded that the
king had this audience hall specifically designed for his advisers and
legal draftsman. In designing this building, the architect broke with
tradition, incorporating features (such as balustrades and moonstones)
that were previously reserved for monasteries.
