Columns of San Marco and San Teodoro

The Columns of San Marco and San Teodoro in the Piazetta

These two granite columns with symbols of the saints were erected by Nicolo Barattieri in 1172. Public executions were held there. They are dedicated to St. Mark, the adopted saint of Venice, and the original Byzantine patron saint, St. Theodore. They are located at the end of the piazza, near the lagoon.
