Mubarak Mahal

Mubarak Mahal, or Welcome Palace

After passing through the Atish Pol, or "Stable Gate," visitors arrive at the buildings that consititute the City Palace Complex. The triple-arched Tripolia Gate (the official entrance) is not reserved for the royal family. The first building visitors encounter is the Mubarak Mahal. This sandstone "Welcome Palace" was built in 1900 by Madho Singh II to receive guests. Designed by Sir Swinton Jacob, it now contains part of the palace museum. Here, in the toshakhana or royal wardrobe section, brocade, silk, and fine muslim costumes of the royal family dating back to the 18th century can be found.
